Niebuhr, Barthold Georg
(27 ago. 1776, Copenhague, Dinamarca–31 ene. 1831, Bonn, Prusia).

Historiador alemán. Fue funcionario público en Dinamarca y Prusia antes de renunciar y convertirse en historiógrafo oficial del Estado. En 1810, en la Universidad de Berlín, inició una serie de conferencias que conformarían la base de su magna obra, Historia de Roma (1811–32), que llegaría a ejercer una enorme influencia. En esta Niebuhr introduce la idea del escepticismo en los estudios históricos y enseña cómo analizar las fuentes, a descartar el material inservible y a revelar los elementos a partir de los cuales es posible reconstruir los hechos históricos; con ello inauguró una nueva era en la historiografía.
